Bobcats landing Jose Calderon? Suns building depth
Well, the Charlotte Bobcats needed a point guard, and they went out and got one. They'll now need a starting center after this deal, but they sure got that point guard thing sussed out. The trade isn't final yet, but the Bobcats and Raptors still appear to be close to sending Jose Calderon(notes) and Reggie Evans(notes) to the Bobcats in exchange for Tyson Chandler(notes), and Boris Diaw(notes). Calderon is the perfect pass-first point guard for this team, he piles up assists by the boatload and rarely turns the ball over. On a team that struggles to score, Calderon's creative ways will help the Bobcats moving forward. He's a perfect fit and a great pickup for Charlotte. But to give up two starters for him? And leave yourself, essentially, center-less? Chandler's not much to rely on. He works hard, but he's perpetually injured and tends to miss 20 games a season. So it's not as if, by trading Tyson, the Bobcats are denying themselves the chance at a gimmie 82 games a year and 35 minutes a game. But Diaw can play center, and well. And despite Nazr Mohammed's(notes) underrated 2009-10 season in Charlotte, the Bobcats essentially traded away their two best chances at passable pivotmen for Calderon. The summer isn't over, clearly, and the trade might not even be over. Toronto could throw in, say,Copa Mundial, a signed-and-traded Rasho Nesterovic(notes). But as much as Tyrus Thomas(notes) (the new starting power forward, nervously signed for $40 million) can block shots and as good as Nazr looked in spot minutes last season, this price seems a bit dear. Toss in Chandler's expiring contract, I mean, teams are going to want that, right? Calderon's a good player and I'm a big fan of his game and what he can do for the Bobcats, but I can see why owner Michael Jordan might be a bit leery about pulling the trigger, here. The Phoenix Suns, whoever is running them, are pulling a lot of triggers these days. The team just sent Leandro Barbosa(notes) to the Toronto Raptors for Hedo Turkoglu(notes), and it's in the process of working a sign-and-trade deal with the Atlanta Hawks to net Josh Childress(notes). The Suns now have, by my count, 80 forwards. The team needs the depth, and it needs to keep piling on the talent with Amar'e Stoudemire's(notes) 23 points per game rocking off to New York. Hedo was pretty hateable as a Raptor last season, but the guy can score. And Childress was always an underrated player for the Hawks. But can they score in Phoenix? Hedo, famously, needs the ball. He needs to dominate the rock in order to work his way into scoring position, and while he can get hot from long range, he's not the purest spot up shooter from behind the arc. And, as we saw last season, he chafed a bit while having to work off the ball with a Steve Nash(notes)-like player in Jose Calderon doing most of the work. So how's that gonna fit with the real thing? Gotta bring in someone, I guess. Which is why they're working to land Childress, as well. Again, Josh has a good game, but he's not a three-point shooter,F50 Adizero II TRX FG, save for the possible exception of the odd corner three. If Grant Hill(notes) can work alongside Nash,CR Mercurial Vapor Superfly III, I suppose Childress can as well, and a replacement for Hill at twice the price and half the age (something like that) is a sound move. But he's not a pure shooter, and he'll be asked to work as one. Hedo makes way too much money, he has an astonishing four years and nearly $35 million left on his deal, but he won't be destroying Phoenix's payroll too much. The team does have some pretty good flexibility with Jason Richardson's(notes) contract coming off the books after next season, but with all these win-now moves, you'd probably be correct in guessing that the Suns want to extend Richardson. Does this make up for Stoudemire's defection? Of course not. The guy pumped in nearly 25 points per game on most nights by his lonesome, and you can't replace one star with a series of semi-stars and just hope to "pretty good" your way toward 60 wins. But these moves do give the Suns options, and depth. And because no team is taking down the Lakers out West on paper, the best any of these teams can hope for is get into a seven game series, work out the matchups, and see how things play out. And when you try to win because you might have a matchup to your advantage, despite being the inferior team on paper, you have to give yourself options. You have to create those options by building depth. And this is what the Suns are doing here. It won't put them over the top, on paper at least, but you can understand these moves. |
